IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva stated in a Bloomberg interview on February 9, 2026, that the recent weakening of the U.S. dollar is unlikely to affect its position as the dominant reserve and settlement currency in the global financial system. She emphasized that deep capital markets, U.S. economic size, and entrepreneurial vigor continue to underpin the dollar’s role. She also noted that the depreciation benefits emerging market borrowers by reducing the real value of their dollar-denominated debt and easing interest payments. The remarks were made during a session in Al-Ula, Saudi Arabia. On the same day, reports indicated Chinese regulators were advising financial institutions to reduce holdings of U.S. Treasuries due to concerns over concentration risk and volatility.
