Apple Pitches New Macs as Cheaper AI Alternative to Cloud Data Centers

Apple will begin shipping upgraded Mac Minis and Mac Studios on Sept. 22, 2026, marketing the machines to corporate buyers as a lower-cost alternative to renting AI compute from cloud providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic. The high-end desktops, which can cost nearly $20,000, run AI tasks locally without per-token fees. The push targets a market where Apple holds roughly 4.6% of enterprise desktops versus 91.3% for Microsoft's Windows, according to IDC's Linn Huang. Apple's unified memory architecture, introduced with its first Apple Silicon chips in 2020, has made Macs effective at running large AI models; at its September launch event, Apple demonstrated four Mac Studios running a one-trillion-parameter model off a single wall outlet. Microsoft and Nvidia are preparing competing AI-focused desktop offerings. Apple hardware chief Johny Srouji said on-device models can scale from Mac Studios down to iPhones and iPads, adding, "There's no cost per token."
