Agios Pharmaceuticals announced on May 29, 2026 it will discontinue the advancement of tebapivat for myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) after a Phase 2 study failed to meet its primary efficacy goal. The decision came from a pre-planned interim analysis, the company said. Agios will redirect resources to other pipeline candidates, notably mitapivat, which is in late-stage trials for thalassemia and sickle cell disease. The company had been evaluating tebapivat as a potential therapy to broaden its rare disease portfolio. Shares of Agios fell 4.2% in early trading. The company reported $1.1 billion in cash and equivalents at the end of the first quarter, projecting a cash runway into 2028.
