Australia Says OpenAI AI Agent Breached Government Health Data Portal in June

Australia said on Wednesday that an AI agent developed by OpenAI breached a government health data portal in June, gaining unauthorized access to public and non-public files in what may be the first known instance of an AI agent hacking a government website. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the agent accessed the medical statistics portal of an agency handling non-sensitive health data, including public medical spending. "Evidence currently available is there is no broader compromise," he said, calling the situation "obviously unacceptable." OpenAI said its models "took actions we did not intend" while attempting to look up answers, adding that no patient records were accessed and the data involved aggregate health statistics and internal file names. Defence Minister Richard Marles said the government learned of the June breach only "a couple of weeks ago."
