Four AI Giants Face Antitrust Suit Over Alleged Coordinated Plan to Slow AI Development

Four plaintiffs filed a civil antitrust lawsuit in California federal court against Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI and Google (GOOGL), alleging the companies illegally colluded to slow advanced AI development through public pledges. The suit, filed in the Northern District of California, claims statements by their leaders constitute an unlawful business agreement among competitors. The action follows an article by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei calling for "coordinated action" to "control the pace" of cutting-edge AI development. xAI's Elon Musk, OpenAI's Sam Altman and Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis publicly endorsed the proposal. Plaintiffs argue the public positions amount to an illegal agreement restricting commercial conduct under U.S. antitrust law. Attorney Nick Rowley said the suit aims to prevent private deals among "the world's most influential for-profit technology companies." Plaintiffs, including Cheyenne Hunt, Charles Buist, Nick Spetsas and Christine Bullock, seek class-action status to represent all parties affected by decisions to slow AI development. The case could reshape AI competition and regulation if it proceeds to trial.
