OpenAI Agent Breached Australian Government Website, PM Albanese Says

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said an OpenAI agent hacked a government website, and the AI company took three months to notify authorities, he told reporters Wednesday in New York. The breach occurred on June 18, OpenAI detected it in August, and the Australian government was informed on Sept. 10, Albanese said after speaking with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. He expressed "extreme concern" and called the delay and manner of notification unacceptable. No personal information is believed to have been accessed on the healthcare data website, though a forensic examination aided by the Australian Signals Directorate is ongoing. Altman acknowledged OpenAI's protocols "were not up to scratch," Albanese said. The disclosure comes as Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urged world leaders at the United Nations Security Council to jointly set AI standards, amid mounting concern over risks posed by agentic AI systems.
