OpenAI, Anthropic, Hugging Face CEOs to Brief UN Security Council on AI Risks
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Hugging Face co-founder Clément Delangue will brief the 15-member UN Security Council on September 23, 2026, addressing risks that increasingly powerful AI systems could escape human control and threaten international security. Altman plans to urge world leaders to adopt benchmarks for measuring AI capabilities and assessing company safeguards. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot will chair the session, with the US and China — leading AI rivals — also set to speak. A European diplomat said the core question is whether algorithms interacting with each other could one day trigger a war. Ahead of a September 24 Trump-Xi meeting in Washington, the US and China have discussed a notification system covering AI-related incidents that reach national security level. President Trump told the General Assembly on September 22 that he rejects any "globalist scheme to control" AI, saying the US would "encourage it, not rein it in" while watching closely through the Justice Department — putting him at odds with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who has pushed for global AI governance.
