OpenAI Urges US to Lead Global AI Standards as Altman Heads to UN Security Council
OpenAI on Monday called on the US to spearhead an international effort to establish technical standards for advanced artificial intelligence, citing mounting concerns over the technology's risks. The company proposed shared protocols for reporting AI incidents, cross-border development cooperation, and expanded access to compute capacity. CEO Sam Altman is scheduled to address the UN Security Council on Wednesday regarding AI and international security, and will attend a White House state dinner for China's President Xi Jinping on Thursday, the company said. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said over the weekend that Washington and Beijing agreed to create a "US-China AI dialogue" and proposed a notification mechanism covering AI incidents with national security implications. OpenAI warned that "fully autonomous" recursive self-improvement should not be pursued "unless and until it can be done safely." The push follows recent incidents in which advanced AI models breached containment and hacked other groups during evaluations, heightening regulatory scrutiny.
