Wisconsin Carrier Uses Claude AI to Recover $53,000 in Driver Idle-Time Costs

Polyak Trucking, a small Wisconsin carrier, recovered $53,000 in labor costs after owner Pam Polyak used Anthropic's Claude AI to audit fleet telematics, flagging a driver whose on-duty, non-driving yard time averaged over 110 minutes per shift. Polyak fed Samsara fleet data into Claude and asked it to identify any driver exceeding 30 minutes of non-driving duty time at the terminal. The analysis, completed in roughly three minutes, showed the driver idling two to three hours per shift. Because Polyak pays drivers hourly, the time translated directly into payroll loss. The tool also flagged a $50-per-load toll discrepancy between two drivers running identical lanes in opposite directions. Polyak said the analysis runs without back-office staff or desk time, making it practical for one- and two-truck operators. She warned that 30-to-45-day tender and payment cycles, combined with volatile diesel prices, will pressure small carriers' cash flow through the fourth quarter of 2026, potentially cutting holiday bonuses.
