Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced it will acquire AI startup World Labs for $8.2 billion, a deal that also brings founder Fei-Fei Li to the chipmaker as chief scientist. Analysts say Li — known as the "godmother of AI" for creating the ImageNet dataset — may be the acquisition's most valuable asset. Li will report directly to CEO Lisa Su, giving AMD unusually high visibility into leading AI model research, StoneX analyst Cody Acree said. World Labs, founded in 2024, develops spatial intelligence models that generate and simulate 3D environments, focusing on "world models" that predict real-world physics. Acree said the hire could boost AMD's credibility among AI researchers and aid recruiting, while improving its Instinct GPU and ROCm software stack. Freedom Capital Markets' Paul Meeks said the deal signals AMD's "serious intent" in physical AI. Equity Armor's Joe Tigay cautioned AMD must still prove it can translate research into broad adoption, noting commercial payoff in robotics remains distant.
