NASA on May 26, 2026 awarded SpaceX six additional certified crew rotation missions to the International Space Station, securing transportation through 2030. The contract, valued at an estimated $1.7 billion based on a previous per-mission cost of $287 million, deepens SpaceX’s position as the sole U.S. provider of astronaut transport. The expansion follows persistent delays in Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner program, which has yet to receive crewed flight certification due to technical failures and schedule overruns. The single-provider reality emerged after NASA’s planned dual-transport system broke down, leaving SpaceX’s Dragon capsule as the only operational vehicle. Recent ISS mission-scheduling adjustments have added further urgency to the need for reliable launches. While SpaceX ramps up these missions, it is also progressing on the Starship system for NASA’s Artemis lunar program and expects to submit an S-1 filing next month.
