Walmart's decision to accept Apple Pay and Google Pay after years of resistance marks a turning point for mobile wallets, pressuring banks to track whether their cards remain top-of-wallet as digital payments gain share. Digital wallets account for 40% of U.S. online transaction value and 17% of in-store point-of-sale value, per Worldpay. Nuvei research found 57% of respondents expect their preferred payment method to be available. Pulse data showed 17% of debit transactions initiated via mobile wallet in a 2026 report, while SoFi data found tap-to-pay gained more share than any other method in the second quarter. Consultants from Cornerstone Advisors, ACI Worldwide, Nuvei and Usio urged banks to measure wallet adoption, maintain card credentials and manage tokenization through lost-phone or reissuance events. "It's not enough to win the account; you have to keep winning the spend," said Prashant Shah of SoFi Tech Solutions.
