Barclays Delays Three-Day Office Mandate to 2027 After Staff Revolt
Barclays has postponed its three-day-a-week office mandate to the start of 2027, retreating from a policy set to take effect Monday, September 28, 2026, after thousands of employees objected. Under the compromise, UK staff will be encouraged but not required to comply during a transition period, according to an internal memo from CEO CS Venkatakrishnan cited by the Financial Times. The mandate, affecting 45,000 employees, was originally planned for immediate implementation. Thousands of workers signed an open letter coordinated by Unite, which represents 80% of the bank's staff, seeking commuting-cost compensation and exemptions for commutes exceeding 40 minutes. Barclays said its updated onsite arrangements will proceed as planned, with transitional measures for affected employees. The reversal follows broader City resistance to return-to-office mandates, including potential legal action by TSB staff over Santander's three-day requirement.
