Thirteen European cloud providers and tech firms, including OVHcloud (OVH.PA) and Germany’s Nextcloud, joined EU lawmakers and NGOs on June 1, 2026, to back the European Commission’s initiative to cut reliance on U.S. technologies. The group issued an open letter demanding “technological sovereignty,” urging Europe to design, build, and regulate its own digital infrastructure for sensitive public contracts. The letter, signed by Mastodon, Proton, Ecosia, and QuantWare among others, comes ahead of the Commission’s planned June 3 measures to prioritize European cloud streaming services in public tenders and accelerate domestic semiconductor production. Lawmakers from the Greens group and six civil organizations, including Defend Democracy, also endorsed the push. “Our message is simple: Build European, buy European, protect European,” said lawmaker Alexandra Geese.
