The US Export-Import Bank plans to fund up to $7 billion in critical minerals and energy projects in Argentina, according to a document seen by Reuters, deepening economic cooperation between Washington and Buenos Aires under Argentine President Javier Milei. The package is set to be announced in New York on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, during the United Nations General Assembly, a person familiar with the matter said, as the US seeks greater access to Western Hemisphere energy and critical minerals. The funds will allow companies operating in Argentina to receive loans to purchase equipment from American manufacturers over the next two years. Argentina holds major deposits of lithium, shale oil and copper. Major operators include Rio Tinto, BHP and Chevron. Argentina's Congress has yet to ratify a February bilateral trade and investment agreement that included critical minerals cooperation.
