"Avengers: Endgame" is once again the highest-grossing film of all time after Disney and Marvel Studios rereleased the 2019 blockbuster on Sept. 25 as "Avengers: Endgame Encore." The version adds footage teasing December's "Avengers: Doomsday" plus an introduction from Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans. It grossed $26 million domestically and $86 million worldwide in its opening weekend. The rerelease has added roughly $126 million globally, lifting "Endgame's" lifetime total to $2.9255 billion, just ahead of James Cameron's "Avatar" at $2.9237 billion. "Endgame" first took the title in 2019, then lost it in 2021 when "Avatar" was rereleased in China. The run signals Hollywood's continued reliance on established intellectual property. The 2026 summer box office hit a record $4.76 billion domestically, nearly 10% ahead of 2019, with franchise titles like "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" and "Toy Story 5" leading. Rereleases rarely exceed $10 million, according to analyst David A. Gross.
