The European auto market grew 3.6% in May 2026, driven by a surge in electric vehicle (EV) demand, according to data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) on June 23, 2026. Chinese automakers and Tesla significantly expanded their market share, intensifying competition for traditional European brands. New car registrations across the EU, UK, and EFTA totaled 1,152,523 units for the month. Year-to-date registrations through May increased 4.5%. Pure electric vehicle (BEV) registrations surged 39.1% year-over-year, plug-in hybrids (PHEV) grew 13.2%, and traditional hybrids increased 8.2%, collectively accounting for over two-thirds of new registrations. Conversely, gasoline and diesel car sales each declined approximately 19%. Chinese brands saw substantial growth, with Leapmotor (9863.HK) sales up 465.1%, Chery (9973.HK) up 244.1%, and BYD (002594.SZ) up 136.6%. Tesla (TSLA-US) registrations soared 107.9%. Meanwhile, traditional European automakers like Renault, Stellantis, and Volkswagen experienced 1-3% declines in registrations.
