China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced a five-year plan to cut solid-state battery costs, improve performance and begin commercial production by 2030, as Beijing seeks to extend its dominance in battery technology beyond lithium-ion. China's solid-state battery market was valued at about $42.5 million in 2025 and is projected to reach $384.8 million by 2030, a 44.4% compound annual growth rate versus a global average of 37.5%, according to the Global Times. The plan also covers sodium and flow batteries and targets new electrode and electrolyte materials, addressing failure issues that have hindered solid-state development. BYD has separately said it plans to mass-manufacture solid-state batteries for EVs by 2030 and will use both technologies in future models. China, the world's largest EV market, is simultaneously managing overcapacity in lithium-ion battery production.
