Fervo Energy Starts Selling Power From First Commercial Enhanced Geothermal Plant Ahead of Schedule
Fervo Energy said on October 1, 2026, that its Cape Station enhanced geothermal plant began selling electricity to the grid on September 30, one day ahead of plan. It is the first enhanced geothermal company to reach commercial operation. The plant synchronized with the grid about a week earlier. The first phase brings online one-third of a planned 100-megawatt facility. The full site could eventually generate up to 4 gigawatts, the company has said. Cape Station's first block took 23 months from groundbreaking to commercial operation. Fervo aims to cut that to as little as 18 months for future blocks. Google and Southern California Edison have committed to buying power from the project. Fervo went public in May in an upsized IPO that raised $1.9 billion. Founded in 2017, it has raised more than $1.3 billion as a startup from investors including Breakthrough Energy Ventures.
