Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said on Sept. 24, 2026, that the principles behind the July 31 coordinated Japan-US currency intervention remain in place, signaling Tokyo's readiness to take joint action again if needed. "The principles since the previous joint intervention remain alive," Katayama told reporters, referring to the operation both governments described as aimed at countering excessive volatility and disorderly market moves. She declined to comment on foreign exchange levels. The yen has weakened beyond 158 per dollar after the Bank of Japan's Sept. 18 rate hike to a 31-year high failed to convince investors that more aggressive tightening is coming. Japanese authorities conducted rate checks in overseas markets on Sept. 18, sources said, a move often seen as a precursor to intervention. The yen briefly strengthened after the checks, but gains proved short-lived.
