US Dollar Hits Over One-Year High as Hawkish Fed Expectations Surge
The U.S. dollar strengthened on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, reaching its highest level in over a year as markets continued to price in an unexpectedly hawkish Federal Reserve stance. A global sell-off in technology stocks also drove investors toward safe-haven assets. The Dollar Index (DXY), tracking the greenback against six major currencies, rose 0.4% to 101.39, marking its highest point since mid-May 2025. Expectations for a Fed rate hike have dramatically increased. The CME FedWatch Tool shows the probability of a 25 basis point hike at the July monetary policy meeting now exceeds 36%, up from 8.5% just a week prior. This repricing follows the Fed's Summary of Economic Projections released on June 17, 2026, which indicated a majority of Federal Open Market Committee members anticipate a rate increase this year to counter inflation. U.S. June Composite PMI output index also rose to 52.2 from 51.5 in May. Meanwhile, the Japanese Yen traded near 1986 lows at 161.58 per dollar, fueling intervention concerns. The Euro fell 0.4% to $1.1379 and the British Pound declined 0.4% to $1.3201.
