Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL) unit Verily Life Sciences will release approximately 32 million sterile male mosquitoes across parts of California and Florida beginning July 2026, in a public health push to suppress disease-carrying mosquito populations. The releases, part of the Debug Project, target Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that transmit Zika, dengue, and chikungunya viruses. Sterile males produced at Verily's automated mass-rearing facility mate with wild females, producing no offspring and reducing the next generation's numbers. The initial phase covers neighborhoods in Fresno County, California, and the Florida Keys, spanning 20 weeks with weekly releases of up to 1 million mosquitoes per square mile. The technique does not involve genetic modification; males are sterilized using Wolbachia bacteria. The project received federal and state regulatory approvals, Verily said. No immediate financial impact was disclosed.
