Google (GOOGL) has lost two pivotal AI researchers to rivals OpenAI and Anthropic, raising concerns about its AI talent retention and strategic direction. Noam Shazeer, co-author of the foundational Transformer architecture, announced his move to OpenAI on June 18, 2026. John Jumper, the Nobel laureate behind AlphaFold, subsequently confirmed his departure from Google DeepMind to join Anthropic. Jumper, a key figure in protein structure prediction, leaves Google after nearly nine years. His shift to Anthropic aligns with the latter's growing investment in life sciences AI, amid reports of Google DeepMind employees' concerns over the company's enterprise AI application strategy. Shazeer's departure follows his 2024 return to Google DeepMind after a $2.7 billion technology licensing deal for his startup, Character.AI. His move to OpenAI underscores the challenges large corporations face in retaining top AI talent against more agile, AI-native competitors actively pursuing leading researchers with competitive compensation and dynamic environments.
