The Delhi High Court ruled on May 22, 2026, that Google (GOOGL) infringed trademark rights by allowing rivals to bid on the "Hindware" brand as an advertising keyword, ordering $31,600 in damages. The decision, made public May 29, could set a precedent that reshapes the digital advertising ecosystem. The court found Google's AdWords policy effectively auctions trademarked terms without authorization. Indian businesses welcomed the ruling, with Zerodha founder Nithin Kamath saying it provides a legal route for brands damaged by competitive keyword bidding. Anupam Mittal of Shaadi.com warned the practice could alter advertising economics for millions of businesses. Google, which counts India as a critical market, did not respond to requests for comment.
