Google Tests In-App Flipkart Purchases via Gemini and AI Mode in India

Google has begun limited testing of in-app purchases from Walmart-owned Flipkart through its Gemini chatbot and AI Mode in India, moving the search giant's AI services from product discovery into transactions. Select users see a "Buy" button on certain Flipkart listings that links to a Flipkart-branded checkout without leaving the AI interface. The test covers a small set of products, including smartphones, electronics and mobile accessories, according to people familiar with the matter. Google plans a broader rollout in October 2026, ahead of India's festive shopping season. The initiative follows Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard for AI-agent retail transactions. Google invested about $350 million in Flipkart in 2024 for a minority stake. Rival Amazon listings in the same interface currently lack the Buy option. Flipkart did not respond to a request for comment.
