Alphabet launched its self-designed TPU AI chip into low Earth orbit aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9, marking the first in-orbit test of its Project Suncatcher initiative to build solar-powered machine learning infrastructure in space. The Transporter-18 rideshare mission lifted off at noon Pacific Time on October 1, 2026, from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, carrying multiple Planet Labs satellites, one of which houses a solar prototype fitted with a Google TPU. The mission is uncrewed. Alphabet disclosed Project Suncatcher in November 2025, aiming to develop long-duration orbital ML infrastructure. The company says near-constant sunlight in low Earth orbit can yield up to eight times ground-level solar power, with a long-term goal of networking satellite constellations to handle larger AI workloads. TPU performance under launch vibration, vacuum temperature swings, radiation, and thermal dissipation remains unverified. SpaceX is pursuing its own orbital data center program using GPU-equipped satellites, with Elon Musk claiming space-based model training could become viable within two to three years and pledging a "space supercomputer" deployment by 2027.
