Waymo's Texas AV fleet dwarfs Tesla's, DMV data shows (GOOGL, TSLA)
Alphabet-owned Waymo has registered 577 autonomous vehicles in Texas, dwarfing rivals including Tesla, which listed just 42, according to a new state DMV online tracker launched May 28. The tool, mandated by a law that took effect that day, provides the first accurate public count of autonomous vehicle fleets in the state. Waymo's fleet is the largest, followed by Avride with 317 vehicles and Nuro with 47. Tesla, which launched robotaxi service in Austin last summer and later expanded to Dallas and Houston, registered only 42. Among autonomous trucking companies, Aurora registered 91 driverless trucks, Kodiak AI 33, and Waabi 13. Volkswagen's MOIA has 12 electric microbuses. The data does not track active vehicles or commercial operations, but it underscores Waymo's early dominance as it expands services in Texas cities including Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.
