Short-Haul Truckload Freight Outpaces Long-Haul as Intermodal Shift Accelerates

Short-haul truckload freight is outperforming all other length-of-haul segments in 2025, with the SONAR Local Truckload Volume Index (CSTVI) up 35% year-to-date and 11% since September 2024, according to data presented Wednesday. Loads under 100 miles are the most resilient slice of the truckload market. Long-haul van volumes over 800 miles are down 15% over two years and off 3% year-to-date, as shippers redirect freight to rail. The SONAR Outbound Rail Index is up 6% year-over-year, tightening drayage capacity. The shift reflects intermodal conversion and shrinking distribution networks, each generating short-haul drayage moves at both ends. Analysts cautioned the trend hinges on intermodal service quality holding. The national tender rejection rate stood at 14.21% on September 23, giving carriers meaningful freight selectivity heading into peak season.
