Mastercard (MA) CEO Michael Miebach said AI agents will soon perform autonomous shopping for consumers, ushering in “agentic commerce” that moves from recommendations to independent transactions. In a June 6, 2026, interview with Yahoo Finance, Miebach predicted a curve from assisted agentic payments to fully autonomous spending. Mastercard’s Agent Pay program underpins this shift, offering tokenized transactions, verified AI agents, and consumer-controlled spending limits. Robinhood recently launched a virtual agentic credit card that lets users set purchase parameters and approve AI-made transactions. Miebach flagged security concerns, asking what happens when an agent misinterprets instructions or malfunctions, and stressed that simplicity, security, and clear recourse remain consumer priorities. Mastercard aims to address those gaps as the technology evolves.
