Narrative

Billionaire investor Bill Ackman reiterated his six-year-old proposal to grant every American $6,750 at birth, invested in a zero-cost equity index fund and locked until retirement. He first outlined the plan in a 2020 New York Times essay and restated it to Fortune in July 2025, telling the magazine, "Everyone needs to participate in capitalism, otherwise you're going to prefer socialism." Ackman, who took Pershing Square Capital Management public on the NYSE in April 2025, has argued the wealth gap leaves non-investors resentful of market gains. The headline $1 million payout assumes 8% annual tax-free returns over 65 years. At 7%, the sum falls to about $549,000; at 6%, about $298,000. A related policy exists: Trump Accounts, created under the Working Families Tax Cuts, seed $1,000 for children born between Jan. 1, 2025, and Dec. 31, 2028, reaching roughly $148,800 at 8% by 2091.
