Treasury Auto-Enrolls 60 Million Children in Trump Accounts
The Treasury Department will begin auto-enrolling more than 60 million children under 18 in Trump Accounts as early as Thursday, replacing an opt-in structure. Temporary regulations published Tuesday expand enrollment from roughly 7 million of the 73 million eligible children. Auto-enrollment does not extend all benefits automatically. Families seeking deposits, employer contributions, or the one-time $1,000 federal seed deposit for children born between 2025 and 2028 must formally claim accounts. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent forecast the expansion at a House Financial Services Committee hearing this month. The rules create a master group trust allowing accounts without personal data, enabling about 2 million newborn accounts annually. Donors may funnel appreciated stock through charitable intermediaries, subject to a mandatory five-year holding period. Dell CEO Michael Dell has pledged $6.25 billion. Trump Accounts, or 530A accounts, were created under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act signed in July 2025 and are managed through Bank of New York Mellon and Robinhood. American Airlines, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have pledged to match the $1,000 seed deposit.
