U.S. April Construction Spending Edges Up After Sharp Downward Revision to March Data
U.S. construction spending inched up 0.1% in April 2026, reaching a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $2.15 trillion, the Commerce Department reported on June 1. The marginal gain was undercut by a significant downward revision to the previous month's data. The April increase followed a revised 0.4% decline in March, a sharp adjustment from the initially reported 0.2% gain. The downward revision suggests construction activity lost more momentum in early 2026 than previously estimated. Residential construction spending was flat in April, reflecting ongoing pressure from elevated mortgage rates. Non-residential spending gained 0.2%, supported by manufacturing and infrastructure projects. On a year-over-year basis, total construction spending rose 4.8% from April 2025.
