The US will ban imports of Canadian dairy, alcohol and large-displacement motorcycles effective September 29, 2026, escalating a trade dispute beyond tariffs after Washington-Ottawa talks collapsed. The August 22 breakdown led to 50% US tariffs on roughly $20 billion in Canadian goods, with Canada matching dollar-for-dollar two days later. A senior administration official told CBC the banned categories were chosen because Canada has low US import penetration or the US has substantial domestic production or alternative suppliers. Four of seven banned categories — beer, molasses, non-alcoholic beer and wine — account for under 1% of the US market. Spirits carries the largest US trade deficit at $495.7 million, making it the most exposed category. Freight data shows a muted impact. SONAR's Canada-to-US rail container index fell gradually about 10% from February through August, dipped to 601 on September 8, then round-tripped above 960 within 10 days. The dispute layers atop Section 301 tariffs covering 60 economies effective July 24, with Canada's baseline rate at 10%.
