Xi to Make First US State Visit Since 2023 as Trade Truce Nears Expiry

Chinese President Xi Jinping will make a state visit to the US on September 23-25 at President Donald Trump's invitation, China's Foreign Ministry said Monday, as a one-year trade truce winds down. The trip is Xi's first to the US since 2023. Trump and Xi last met in May. Officials from both sides held trade talks Sunday in New York, which Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called "very successful," and agreed to establish a dialogue on AI. Both sides are discussing cutting tariffs on goods including American energy and agricultural products, and on Chinese manufacturing inputs. Trump will host a state dinner expected to draw Apple Executive Chairman Tim Cook and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Iran, rare earth flows, AI competition and Taiwan are also likely on the agenda. Beijing is Tehran's largest oil customer.
