FTSE Russell's upgrade of Greece from "advanced emerging" to "developed" market status took effect on Sept. 21, 2026, moving 62 Greek stocks into its developed-market indices per Piraeus Securities. STOXX simultaneously reclassified Greece as developed, adding nine companies — National Bank of Greece, Eurobank, Piraeus Bank, Alpha Bank, GEK Terna, Jumbo, Motor Oil, PPC and Metlen — to the STOXX Europe 600. Index-tracking funds adjusted portfolios ahead of the changes: emerging-market funds sold Greek shares while developed-market funds bought them, pushing Athens trading volume to a record €4.26 billion during Friday's closing auction, surpassing the prior €3.03 billion record set in May 2008, according to Euro2day. The reclassification coincided with ratings momentum. Moody's revised Greece's Baa3 outlook to positive from stable on Friday, and Scope Ratings raised its rating to BBB+ from BBB with a stable outlook, citing falling debt, budget surpluses and improved tax collection. Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierakakis said the moves show Greece has become "more resilient and more credible," while cautioning that fiscal discipline and reforms must continue.
