Meta Expands Global Teen Content Controls, Tests Instagram Feed Diversification Tool
Meta Platforms Inc. (META) said on June 2, 2026, it is rolling out expanded content restrictions for teen accounts globally across Instagram, Facebook and Messenger, aiming to mitigate legal and regulatory risks tied to youth safety. The move follows Meta’s April warning that EU and U.S. regulatory blowback could significantly impact its business. On March 25, 2026, a Los Angeles jury found Meta and Google negligent for designing platforms harmful to young people, awarding $6 million to a now-20-year-old woman who became addicted as a child. Meta said the default 13+ content filter—which screens out inappropriate material—is now standard for teen accounts. A more restrictive “Limited Content” setting will be added to Facebook and Messenger later this year. Separately, Instagram is testing a feature to diversify feeds and reduce repeated exposure to themes like dieting or anxiety coping, aiming to promote healthier browsing habits.
