Meta (META) AI Transformation Lead Departs Amid Internal Backlash
Emily Dalton Smith, the high-ranking executive overseeing Meta Platforms' (META) crucial AI transformation initiatives, is leaving the company. Her departure, announced on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, comes amidst significant internal controversy and employee dissent regarding Meta's ambitious strategy to integrate AI across its products and workflows. Dalton Smith, who previously served as VP of Product Management and product lead for Threads, was appointed just two months prior to spearhead internal AI tool development. This initiative, part of Meta's "Agent Transformation Accelerator" (ATA) program, aims for AI agents to automate tasks currently performed by employees, including the development of the internal AI assistant Metamate. The plan has drawn criticism from employees concerned about job security, following approximately 10% staff cuts and reassignments. Dalton Smith’s team was also integrating features from Manus, an AI agent startup acquired for an estimated $2 billion in December 2025, a deal that faced regulatory challenges from China in April 2026. New Metamate features were expected to launch by June 1, 2026.
