Meta Platforms (META) Settles Kentucky School District Lawsuit for $9 Million
Meta Platforms Inc. agreed to pay $9 million to resolve a Kentucky school district’s lawsuit alleging its social media platforms contributed to a student mental-health crisis, according to settlement records disclosed on May 29, 2026. The company settled with Breathitt County School District on May 21, shortly before a June trial, marking the first public disclosure of financial terms. The rural Appalachian district, serving about 1,600 students, sought over $60 million in damages for costs tied to anxiety, depression and self-harm it blamed on addictive platform designs. The case was considered a bellwether for roughly 1,200 similar claims by other U.S. school districts consolidated in federal court in California. Co-defendants Snap, Alphabet and ByteDance previously settled under undisclosed terms. Meta has warned investors that youth social-media regulations in the U.S. and EU could materially affect its business. More than 5,700 related lawsuits are pending in California state and federal courts.
