Meta Signs First Environmental Credits Deal With Recycling Startup MacroCycle

Meta will purchase environmental attribute credits from Cambridge, Massachusetts-based plastics recycling startup MacroCycle, funding construction of the company's first commercial plant in the U.S., the companies said Tuesday. The three-year-old startup's solvent-based process strips contaminants from PET waste, including textiles, which recycle at just 0.5%. MacroCycle says the method cuts carbon emissions 80% versus virgin PET. The demonstration plant will produce 5,000 metric tons annually; future facilities are planned at 50,000 metric tons per year. Meta confirmed it is the company's first such credits agreement, counting avoided emissions toward its carbon footprint, which is expanding amid the AI boom. CEO Stewart Peña Feliz said the deal should ease subsequent customer contracts.
