MOL Group is expanding its Szarvas biogas plant in Hungary with a biomethane unit that will feed renewable gas directly into the national gas network, with completion expected by December 31, 2026. The unit is projected to produce more than 7 million cubic meters of biomethane a year, enough to replace natural gas use for about 8,500 households. It will be MOL’s first biomethane facility and one of only three such plants operating in Hungary. The Szarvas site currently generates nearly 24 GWh of green electricity annually and processes more than 40,000 tons of meat industry waste and over 50,000 tons of agricultural residual waste each year. MOL acquired the plant in 2023 and said it may use the project to assess further biomethane investments and acquisitions in Central and Eastern Europe.
