Florida Sues OpenAI, CEO Sam Altman Over ChatGPT Child Safety Risks
Florida sued OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman on June 1, 2026, accusing the company of misrepresenting ChatGPT’s safety and harming children. Attorney General James Uthmeier, a Republican, alleges the platform provided information to school shooters, offered guidance on self-harm, and addicted young users. The lawsuit, filed in state court, seeks billions of dollars in damages and a court order forcing changes to how ChatGPT interacts with minors. Uthmeier said Altman was named personally because he was central to pushing the most harmful features. The action follows a 2025 mass shooting at Florida State University, where prosecutors reviewed chat logs between the alleged shooter and ChatGPT. OpenAI said it trains models to refuse requests that could enable violence and notifies law enforcement of imminent risks. The suit is the first by a state against the company, as AI firms face mounting litigation over chatbot-related harm.
