Microsoft (MSFT) Boosts China AI Revenue, Selling OpenAI Models to ByteDance, Tencent
Microsoft (MSFT) has established a significant business selling OpenAI models to major Chinese technology companies, including ByteDance, Meituan (03690-HK), and Tencent (00700-HK), amidst escalating US-China AI tensions. ByteDance alone is projected to spend over $1 billion annually on Microsoft's AI and cloud services. Microsoft's Azure AI business in China saw revenue grow approximately 300% in the fiscal year ending June 2025, following a 400% surge in the prior fiscal year, according to former Chief Commercial Officer Judson Althoff. While China represented about 1.5% of Microsoft's total revenue in 2024, the rapid AI growth highlights its strategic importance. The strategy faces controversy due to US concerns over intellectual property theft and technology misuse. OpenAI has privately expressed concerns to Microsoft regarding insufficient measures to prevent Chinese firms from using "model distillation" techniques to replicate its models. Chinese clients access these models via servers located outside mainland China, such as in Singapore.
