Investor Michael Burry expanded short positions against Micron Technology (MU), Nebius Group (NBIS), the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) and Palantir Technologies (PLTR), citing potential rapid growth in memory chip supply, he said in a Substack post updated September 22. Burry referenced comments from Acer Chairman Jason Chen that mainstream memory supply has improved, with DDR4 seeing more sellers than buyers, as Chinese producers keep adding capacity. Burry called the new positions "not small." His thesis: current DRAM tightness stems partly from capacity shifted to high-bandwidth memory for AI data centers, not purely from permanent demand growth. As makers restore conventional DRAM output and China's CXMT ramps production—its fifth-generation platform entered mass production with 24Gb LPDDR5X, lifting die output at least 50% per wafer—the supply gap could narrow and pressure prices. Views diverge. SK Hynix has warned 2027 may be the tightest supply year. Micron reported fiscal Q3 revenue of $41.46 billion with 84.6% gross margin, guiding fiscal Q4 to about $50 billion, with results due September 30. On September 22, MU closed up 5% at $1,096.16; NBIS rose 1.43% to $236.12; PLTR gained 1.04% to $184.99; SOXX added 2.4% to $572.78.
