Micron (MU) Starts DDR4, LPDDR4 Output at Virginia Fab; Shortage Persists, TrendForce Says
Micron Technology Inc. (MU) on May 26, 2026, said it began producing 1α nanometer LPDDR4 and DDR4 memory at its Manassas, Virginia, Fab 6 for automotive, defense, industrial, networking, and medical clients. Research firm TrendForce said the move represents an internal capacity reallocation and will not expand overall DDR4 supply. The ramp-up aligns with U.S. reshoring policy and will push Fab 6’s total wafer starts to 1.5 times the Q2 2026 level by Q4 2027, TrendForce said. Mass production of 1α nm chips begins at end-2026 and quadruples in 2027, while older lines at Micron’s OMT plant are phased out. Equipment was shifted from OMT and new tools added for process upgrades. Micron’s DDR4 share of total DRAM output will consequently shrink to about 7% in 2026 and decline further annually. TrendForce expects DDR4 to remain in shortage through 2026 with prices rising on strong networking demand. Global capacity will split: OMT focusing on DDR5 and HBM, Fab 6 on niche, long-lifecycle products.
