Netflix Inc. (NFLX) said its board appointed lead independent director Jay Hoag as chairman, replacing co-founder Reed Hastings, who stepped down after the annual shareholder meeting on June 4, according to a regulatory filing on June 5, 2026. Hastings, who co-founded the streaming service in 1997, left the board to focus on philanthropy and other pursuits. He transformed Netflix from a DVD-by-mail operation into a global streaming giant. Hoag, a board member since 1999 and lead independent director for over a decade, co-founded venture capital firm Technology Crossover Ventures, a longtime Netflix investor. He also serves on the boards of Zillow Group Inc. (Z) and Peloton Interactive Inc. (PTON).
