Africa summit highlights shared satellite infrastructure push to cut data costs

Africa’s space sector took focus at the Africa Forward Summit on May 14, 2026, as SkyConnect outlined a plan to link underused ground stations into a shared network aimed at lowering satellite data costs and speeding delivery of critical information. The proposal would let operators pool existing ground infrastructure rather than build standalone networks, potentially improving access to satellite data for agriculture, disaster response, climate monitoring and connectivity services across the continent. The summit also highlighted Mauritius’ “Brain Gain” strategy, which seeks to convert African talent outflows into skilled-worker inflows by positioning the island economy as a regional hub beyond tourism.
