AI Power Demand Pressures Lake Tahoe as Liberty Utilities Faces May 2027 Supply Gap

Lake Tahoe faces a potential electricity supply crunch after Liberty Utilities’ power purchase agreement with NV Energy expires in May 2027, forcing the region to seek a new supplier as AI-driven data center demand tightens Western power markets. NV Energy said the contract wind-down was long planned and not caused by data centers. Still, the utility has more than 22 gigawatts of load requests, more than 40 times Lake Tahoe’s peak demand, according to Bloomberg-cited figures. NV Energy’s power is expected to be redirected within Nevada, where data center development has accelerated. Lake Tahoe’s grid is more closely connected to Nevada than California, limiting replacement options. Regional competition is also rising: a recently approved 40,000-acre data center project in Utah could require up to 9 gigawatts of electricity, compared with current statewide use of about 4 gigawatts. The supply shift is likely to raise electricity costs for Lake Tahoe residents and second-home owners in 2027.
