AI turbocharges patent creation at India tech hubs, executives say, but local filing delays persist
Executives from Publicis Groupe’s Epsilon, Kimberly-Clark and Daimler Truck said on May 27 that artificial intelligence is accelerating the creation of patents and intellectual property at their global capability centres (GCCs) in India, reinforcing the country’s role as an innovation hub. India’s GCCs generated $98.4 billion in revenue last fiscal year, and national patent filings rose 11.3% to over 90,000 in fiscal 2024, though executives noted that most IP is filed through U.S. or European parents, understating local contributions. Regulatory delays persist: patent filings in India can take up to six months, roughly double the U.S. timeline, while approvals stretch for years. Manpower shortages at the Indian Patent Office continue to slow grants, but recent online upgrades and video hearings have eased the process.
