Anthropic Eyes Apple (AAPL) Digital ID for AI Export Compliance
Anthropic is reportedly considering integrating Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) Digital ID feature for user nationality and identity verification, aiming to comply with U.S. government AI model export control regulations. This move, reported by 9to5Mac on June 21, 2026, could allow Anthropic to restore U.S. citizen access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 large language models, currently unavailable to foreign users. U.S. export controls currently suspend Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos 5 large language models for non-U.S. users. Establishing robust U.S. citizen identification would allow these models to resume service for domestic users. Anthropic, which already uses Apple's age verification API, presently conducts identity checks via Persona but lacks full mandatory verification. Apple's Digital ID, available on iOS, permits users to store U.S. passports or supported state driver's licenses in their Wallet for secure verification. While requiring an iPhone and valid U.S. identification, potentially limiting access, it offers a rapid solution for Anthropic to achieve regulatory compliance amid escalating global AI oversight.
