Anthropic Files Confidentially for IPO, Seeks to Outpace OpenAI

Artificial intelligence startup Anthropic confidentially submitted draft registration documents for an initial public offering to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on June 1, 2026, moving ahead of rival OpenAI in the race to list on Wall Street this fall. The company, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers and led by the Claude family of AI models, hasn't disclosed the number of shares or price range. The IPO timeline depends on SEC review and market conditions, but the confidential filing marks a formal step toward going public. Anthropic's annual revenue run rate soared to $47 billion, up from $10 billion a year ago, driven by surging enterprise demand for AI tools. Its latest funding round valued the company at $965 billion, surpassing OpenAI's $852 billion valuation from March. The company also leased the entire computing capacity of SpaceX's Colossus 1 data center in Memphis, Tennessee, for $1.25 billion per month through May 2029, according to SpaceX filings. Despite a brief Pentagon blacklisting earlier this year, consumer and enterprise adoption remains strong, with Claude at times topping the U.S. App Store chart.
